Window-Watching, Chocolate Swapping and Bows of Destiny
Have you ever unexpectedly encountered family or friends in places so unlikely that even the best-laid plans couldn't have orchestrated it? Sometimes fate steps in to make the world seem like a much smaller place. Although I like to believe I have control over my own destiny, I’m so grateful for the twist of fate that brought two women and, by extension, two families closer together. I never tire of seeing my mom’s and aunt’s faces light up as they entertain us “kids” with their story…and this Thanksgiving I was delighted to hear it again but with each of them telling it from their perspective.
Glimpses Through Windows
Picture this: Two teenage girls in Greece, unknowingly living parallel lives. Maria and Vicky weren't exactly BFFs (Best Friends Forever), or even FFs (Friends, Fine), but they shared the same neighborhood and school. Maria would observe Vicky stride by her ground-floor window, distinguished by dark almond shaped eyes and a large, impeccably pressed white bow that proudly adorned her mass of flowing black curls. Meanwhile, Vicky had her own window show featuring Maria and the neighboring newsstand. As Vicky walked past, she recalls seeing Maria with her long, blonde hair sitting by the open window of her home and happily people watching. This beautiful girl seemed to inspire a constant stream of chocolate bars and magazines specially delivered from the young man running the newsstand. Little did Maria and Vicky know, these window-framed memories were sneak previews of a future connection.
“What we call coincidence is just the inevitable being pushed forward by its own weight.”
The "I Know You!" Moment
Fast forward a few years (okay, more than a few), and our heroines find themselves in America. In a plot twist that would make Hollywood jealous, they both marry first cousins. No, not each other's first cousins – that would be a different genre entirely. But this cosmic coincidence set the stage for a nostalgic reunion. Imagine the scene: Two women, now in their twenties, worlds apart from their Greek childhood and their respective families, suddenly lock eyes at a family gathering. "Wait a minute... weren't you the chocolate magazine girl?" "And you, the determined schoolgirl with those awesome bows?” Recognition dawns, and their familiar faces – albeit a bit more grown-up – bring back a flood of memories. It was the beginning of a truly special friendship!
Lessons in Gratitude and Connection
This serendipitous reunion taught me a valuable lesson: The world is small and encounters – no matter how trivial they may seem at the time – can circle back in the most amazing ways. My mom Vicky's and Aunt Maria's story is a delightful reminder to embrace life's connections…or, dare I say, fate! It encourages us to look back at our own "window-framed" memories and find gratitude, humor, and joy in them. After all, who knows when that person you saw every day on your way to school might just become a part of your family saga!
