When Creativity Flows, Stress Goes
Stress—it’s the unwelcome guest that always seems to show up unannounced. Whether it's a deadline looming like a dark cloud or the endless cycle of emails and meetings, stress has a way of creeping into our lives and refusing to leave. When that stress turns to chronic distress, it can have a negative impact to our mental and physical wellbeing. What if I told you there's a fun, engaging way to show stress the door?
Enter the world of creative outlets. Research consistently shows that engaging in creative activities can significantly reduce stress and improve mental well-being. A study published in the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association found that just 45 minutes of creative activity can reduce stress levels by 75%! Similarly, the American Journal of Public Health reports that creative activities can lower anxiety and enhance overall emotional resilience.
My Joy in Creative Writing
In my last blog – The Art of Letting Go – I shared that one of my ways for reducing stress is by focusing on creative writing. I have been drafting a fictional novel and it has been way more fun than anticipated. When I write, I get lost in the process of creating characters, building worlds, and weaving intricate plots. I lose track of time, and then something magical happens…the stress just melts away. The best part? You don't have to be the next J.K. Rowling to experience this joy. Just let your imagination run wild and see where it takes you.
“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”
Top 10 Creative Escapes to Kiss Stress Goodbye
If creative writing isn't your thing, don't worry. There are plenty of other creative outlets to explore. Here are 10 ideas to get you started:
Painting and Drawing – Whether you're channeling your inner Picasso or just doodling for fun, painting and drawing can be incredibly therapeutic. Plus, if you mess up, you can always call it "abstract."
Music and Singing – Ever belted out a tune in the shower and felt an instant mood boost? You're not alone. Research shows that singing releases endorphins, the brain's feel-good chemicals, and can even reduce anxiety. One word of caution: Your singing may increase the stress of others in earshot if your voice is off pitch!
Cooking and Baking – Whipping up a delicious meal or baking a batch of cookies can be a delightful way to unwind. Plus, you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor! A study from Harvard Medical School found that cooking can enhance mindfulness and improve overall well-being. Bonus: burnt cookies still make the house smell amazing.
Gardening – There's something inherently calming about getting your hands dirty and nurturing plants. According to a study in the Journal of Health Psychology, gardening can lower cortisol levels and improve mood. Plus, talking to your plants gives you the perfect excuse for those one-sided conversations.
Photography – Capturing beautiful moments through the lens of a camera can be a great stress reliever. Plus, it's a fantastic way to explore your surroundings and appreciate the beauty in everyday life. Just don’t blame me if you become the next Instagram sensation.
Dancing – Feeling a bit down? Put on your favorite song and dance like nobody's watching. A study from Frontiers in Psychology found that dancing can reduce stress and improve mental health. Just make sure to close the blinds to avoid becoming the neighborhood's new YouTube star!
Knitting, Crocheting, and Needlepoint – These old-school hobbies are making a comeback, and for good reason. The repetitive motions can be incredibly soothing, and the satisfaction of creating something with your hands is unparalleled. Plus, it's a great way to make holiday gifts and save money on ugly sweaters.
Playing a Musical Instrument – Whether you're strumming a guitar or tinkling the ivories, playing an instrument can be a fantastic way to relax and express yourself. Research from the American Psychological Association shows that playing music can lower stress and improve cognitive function. Warning: neighbors may not appreciate your 2 AM jam sessions.
Scrapbooking – Combine your love for photography, storytelling, and crafting by creating a scrapbook. It's a wonderful way to preserve memories and tap into your creative side. And it’s a perfect excuse to finally print all those photos stuck on your phone.
DIY Projects – From building furniture to making homemade candles, DIY projects offer endless possibilities for creativity. Plus, there's a unique satisfaction in creating something with your own hands. Just remember to measure twice, cut once, and keep a first-aid kit handy.
Remember, the goal isn't to create a masterpiece (though if you do, that's fantastic!). It's about the process and the happiness it brings. So, pick an outlet that speaks to you, dive in, and let your creativity flow and your stress go.
And if you're ever in doubt, just remember my story. I started drafting a novel for fun, and it has turned into one of the most destressing and joyful experiences of my life. Maybe one day my book will be published or maybe it won’t. The journey is way more fun than the end destination. Go ahead and get your creative on, who knows what treasures you'll uncover on your journey!
